A Legendary Karate Career Comes to an End

Spanish karateka Damián Quintero has officially announced his retirement from competitive sport.

The announcement follows his participation at the 2025 World Karate Championships in Cairo, where the Malaga-born athlete bowed out in the quarter-finals, bringing to a close one of the most successful careers in Spanish martial arts history.

A Storied Career

Quintero, 41, leaves competition with an extraordinary record. Over his long career, he amassed 130 medals across national, European, world, and Olympic circuits, establishing himself as one of the most decorated male karatekas in Spanish history.

Best known for his mastery in kata — the discipline in which athletes perform choreographed routines judged on precision, strength, and rhythm — Quintero spent more than five years ranked world number one and was widely regarded as a pillar of Spanish karate alongside teammate Sandra Sánchez. His Olympic legacy includes a silver medal from the Tokyo 2020 Games, where karate made its debut on the Olympic stage, cementing his place among the sport’s elite on the biggest global platform. Vikipedi

Farewell from the Tatami

After his final performance in Cairo, Quintero took to social media with an emotional farewell message, thanking his family, coaches, and supporters for their unwavering support throughout his career. He wrote that while he hadn’t finished with a medal at his final World Championships, he was leaving “with dignity intact” and proud of all he’d given to the sport. Sur in English

“I said I wouldn’t leave while dragging myself across the tatami,” he shared. “Even though I’m going without a medal, I’m leaving with dignity and the feeling that I gave everything.” Sur in English

Life Beyond Competition

Quintero’s journey to the top was far from conventional. Originally trained as an aeronautical engineer, he once balanced his professional life with elite training before committing full-time to karate when the sport gained Olympic status. Vikipedi

Now retired from competition, Quintero has expressed his intention to continue promoting karate from outside the competitive arena, contributing to the sport’s growth through coaching, mentorship, and advocacy. Sur in English

A Lasting Legacy

Damián Quintero will be remembered not just for his medal haul, but for his influence on karate’s modern era — pushing technical excellence, inspiring a generation of athletes, and raising the profile of kata on both European and world stages.

As the karate world turns the page on one of its greatest athletes, fans and fellow competitors alike celebrate a career defined by dedication, passion, and an indelible mark on the sport’s history.
