New year, new rules
The World Karate Federation (WKF) has announced changes to the Kata and Kumite rules for 2026 before the season begins.
Kata: Back to core tradition
New judging & performance standards:
-
Majority vote system: Judges now decide winners by majority decision, not by totaling displayed individual scores — this aims to reduce inconsistencies in judging.
-
No excessive theatrics:
-
Striking the floor, body, or clothing is prohibited.
-
A proper kiai (spirited shout) must be executed.
-
Clear announcement of the kata’s name is now mandatory.
-
Repeated exaggerations can lead to disqualification.
-
These adjustments are meant to reinforce technical precision and traditional essence over performance flair.
Kumite: Safety & Clarity Focus
Striking rules:
-
No kicks to a fallen opponent: Only controlled hand techniques are permitted when an opponent is down.
Attitude & scoring:
-
Zanshin requirement: After landing a technique, athletes must show continued focus and not turn their back or fall — otherwise the point may be voided.
Contact & recognition:
-
“Skin touch” scoring extended: Light contact (no energy transfer) is now permitted across all ages with specific range rules:
-
5 cm range for hand techniques
-
10 cm range for kicks
-
Mandatory headgear for athletes under 14.
-
Jogai (Out-of-bounds) rule simplified:
-
No Jogai penalty if a point is scored before stepping out.
-
You won’t get a double penalty (Jogai + point against you) if the opponent scores during your exit.
Video Review:
-
Coaches can now request video reviews using dedicated buttons for 1, 2, or 3-point decisions — making it easier and more transparent to challenge calls.
